Introduction to the Florida Atlantic Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Opportunity

The Florida Atlantic Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Opportunity is a program designed to provide undergraduate students with a research experience in the field of AI and sensing for smart cities. The program is led by Jinwoo Jang, Ph.D., and is aligned with the vision of the NSF Engineering Research Center (ERC) for Smart Streetscapes (CS3).

Program Description

Throughout the project, REU participants will engage with AI and IoT technologies to enhance city asset management, public safety, and environmental sustainability at a streetscape level. The project aims to create streetscape applications that harness real-time, hyper-local intelligence to advance our cities' livability, resiliency, and safety. Participants will have tangible research experience in smart cities, ranging from innovative sensor data collection to cutting-edge data science techniques.

Program Details

• The current cohort of REU students is expected to participate in the program in Fall 2024, Spring 2025, and/or Summer 2025.
• The program offers a stipend:
  • Fall/Spring semester: $300/week for 20 hours per week.
  • Summer program: $600/week for 40 hours/week, running for 9 weeks.
• Student expectations and qualifications:
  • Must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or U.S. permanent residents.
  • GPA above 3.0.
  • In-person REU participation is mandatory.
  • Participating in all CS3 activities is mandatory.

Application and Deadline

• Applications include a CV, transcript, and one-page statement highlighting the vision of smart cities and the applicant's potential contributions to the NSF ERC for CS3.
• The initial reviewing process for the NSF REU position starts on 08/19/2024, and applications will be accepted until all spots for the program are filled.

Additional Information

The Institute for Sensing and Embedded Network Systems Engineering (I-SENSE) was established in 2015 to coordinate university-wide activities in the Sensing and Smart Systems pillar of FAU's Strategic Plan for the Race to Excellence. The program provides a meaningful and enjoyable experience for participants, supporting their academic and research career. Participants will deepen their fundamental knowledge in data science, including machine learning, optimization, information theory, and signal processing.
